Auntie Lora Kopitiam in Cheras worth a try

[Pixs copyright Ewe Paik Leong]

Auntie Lora Kopitiam opened in 2008 and its five years of existence means its fare must be worth eating. One plus factor for the coffee-shop is its location: it’s just a ten-minute walk from Leisure Mall which offers ample parking.

Though Auntie Lora's signature dish is prawn mee, the menu boasts of many Penang specialties. Among them are curry mee (soup and dry variety), lam mee, assam laksa and a list of buns. I ordered the prawn mee with pork ribs. The flavour of the soup, even after adding the sambal, was a notch below what I had expected. Though mildly spicy sweet, the soup was a bit weak in prawn aroma. More prawn shells and anchovies should be used to prepare the stock. The pork slipped off the rib bones easily. My verdict: 3.5/5.

The best prawn mee I have eaten was at Tan Kee Prawn Mee, a few doors away from the Restoran Setapak Teowchew, opposite the former Galleria. Either the shop moved or it closed down, possibly because the silver-haired lady operator passed away.
