What’s this novel about?
In
Kuala Lumpur, Su Liu-Shan volunteers to become a Burma Road driver when Japan
blockades China’s ports in 1939. She goes to Singapore for training, meets fellow
driver Kwong Eng-Liang who has a dark side and romance sparks.
During a journey
in Yunnan, an accident injures Liu-Shan when her truck is attacked by Japanese
planes, and she is sent back to Malaya. Meanwhile, Eng-Liang hatches a plan to
make fast money in Kunming and to return to Kuala Lumpur. In 1942, Japan invades Malaya. Liu-Shan rescues British pilot Timothy Clarke when his fighter plane is shot down over Kuala Lumpur.
Later, Liu-Shan is kidnapped
to become a comfort woman and Captain Kasuki Fukuda of the Kempeitai becomes
her main rapist. She escapes and, fueled by revenge, joins the resistance. Unbeknown
to her, Eng-Liang has joined the Kempeitai for personal reasons. In the resistance
camp, Liu-Shan once again meets Timothy Clarke who woos her with the same
fervour as Captain Kasuki courts Candice Chan, a striptease dancer who’s a spy
for the guerillas.
A
trail of seduction, espionage and torture culminates in blood and dead bodies when
Liu-Shan is sent to assassinate the head of the Japanese Military Administration.
In the climax, she crosses path with Captain Kasuki, Timothy and Eng-Liang.
Will Liu-Shan succeed in her mission? Will Eng-Liang choose love for Liu-Shan or loyalty to the Japanese? Will Timothy die for Liu-Shan? Will Captain Kasuki meet his just deserts?
