Symbolic meanings of the contents of Tray of Togetherness, according to Sifu Sabrina

Sifu Sabrina opens the lid of the Tray of Togetherness and nudges it across the coffee table to me. “Eat your way to good blessings and prosperity, Ewe.” Her mouth curves into a carrot-colored half-moon. “Every item in this tray has a symbolic meaning.” She is wearing a short leopard print tube dress, the ceiling lights picking it up and glinting off it fabulously.

I chew on a piece of candied ginger. “What meanings?" Funky heat from the ginger blasts my jaw open and I take a swig of Tiger beer from a frosted mug to cool down.

Sifu Sabrina casts her gaze down at the octagonal tray and explains:

“Candied ginger: symbolizes good health and longevity

Candied coconut ribbons: family unity

Sesame balls: happiness

Candied winter melon: growth and good health

Candied lotus seeds: fertility and many offspring

Candy: sweet life and good luck

Red watermelon seeds: joy and many offspring

Dried kumquats: gold and prosperity.”
