On 27th July 1980, popular local Mandarin singer Lee Yee was killed in a mishap, but he’s still remembered today

On 27th July 1980, singer Lee Yee (real name was Lee Kim Peow), aged 28, was crossing Cheras Road, KL, at 12:15am, when a motorcycle hit him. He died at the General Hospital 17 hours later. 


Born in Penang in 1952, he was a former student of Chung Ling High School.  After winning a singing contest organized by RTM’s Green Network in 1971, he started singing professionally. He recorded 24 LPs. At the time of his death, his wife was pregnant with their first child.

Lee Yee was remembered today. He was born 1942 in Johor and was a former pupil of St John's Institute and Chong Leng High School in Johor. He was a ceramic factory worker who joined a singing contest in 1961 and his hits were 3 Years, Lovers Tears, Lovely Horse, Far-Away Remembrances, etc. He died of a road rage accident on April 27, 1980 So There are Memorial Concerts Held For Him Until This Day. He was married to Ooi Fong Keng in 1965 and they have children and grandchildren (when she get older and widowed since 1980 after his death) Lee Yee was the brother of Lee Chin Siong, the President and CEO Of Life Records Sdn Bhd (丽风唱片股份有限公司) which was founded in 1939 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (then known as Malaya) He is the brother of You Ya (Lee Kim Yin) Lee Yee's father was Lee Kong Ki (1904-1922) who was persecuted by British Colonial Forces for plotting to rebel against their rule. and His mother Die Hong Chuan (1906-1985) was a Henghwa Migrant who lived with the siblings during the 1930s and 1940s when they were born. Lee Yee's cousin was Wan Shi Long or Lee King Chin in real life who died of Malaria in 1986 in Labuan, Malaysia who is a famous singer like him. Lee Yee's tomb has Facts on it. His Favorite Idol was Frank Sinatra in singing and earned him the monicker ''Malaysian Sinatra'' due to his deep like voice of the late singer who died in 1998 after him. His Chinese dialect Counterparts the Cantonese superstar Cheng Kam Cheong (1931-2019) was the Malaysian Matt Monro of Cantopop and Hakka singer Qiu Qingyun who sanged Ah Bo Mai Hang Tsuy which is the Hakka version of Sam Hui's Ten Chuy You Back Ji a movie in Hong Kong titled The Last Message were it is used as an OST (Official Soundtrack)
