“I’m studying for my accountancy degree,” says Lavina Ling (pix above), a college student. “What feng shui tips can you give me to help me score in my examinations?”

“Do you have any boyfriend?” Sifu Sabrina asks, running her hand through her hair (pix below).

“Yes, four.”

Sifu Sabrina raises an eyebrow. “Wow! Are their photos displayed on your desk?”

“Yes, they are framed and placed standing on my desk.”

“Put them elsewhere. They’re distractions. Pictures of fierce animals, such as snarling lions or posters depicting scenes of violence and evil from movies are also a no-no.”

“I see.”

“Next, your desk should not be placed with a window or a door behind the chair. Ideally, your back should face a wall. This position will give you strength to persevere in your study efforts. Now, how often do you clean your study?”

Lavina pouts her lips (pix above). “Once a month,” she says.

“Not good enough. Mop the floor at least once a week to cleanse it of negative energy. A study should be odourless and clutter-free. Burn an essential oil like lavender to increase good vibes. Is there a toilet facing the study?”

“No, but a storeroom.”

“Equally bad. In that case, hang a six-rod metal chime at the door to neutralize the bad effect. Now, regarding bookshelves, they should be covered and not exposed. ”

“You mean they should have doors?”

“Yes. Exposed book shelves have poison arrows shooting everywhere. Another feng shui strategy is to display auspicious objects in your study. What is your year of birth?”

“1994.”

Sifu Sabrina grabs a pen and starts to scribble on a piece of paper. “9 plus 4 equals 13. 1 plus 3 equals 4. 5 plus 4 equals 9. So your kua number is 9. As a matter of interest, for a male, subtract 4 from 10. The auspicious object should be placed according to the fu wei direction based on a person's kua number." She puts the pen down. "They are as follows: 1 is north, 2 is south-west, 3 is east, 4 is south-east, 5 is southwest, 6 is north-west, 7 is west, 8 is northeast and 9 is south. These numbers apply both to men and women. So in your case, your auspicious objects should be placed in the southern direction of your study.”

“What are those objects?”

“A seven-level or nine-level pagoda is popular. Such a pagoda is dubbed the ‘Education Tower’ and is believed to bring great knowledge and fame. Another object is a crystal globe which confers good luck during examinations.”

“Thank you, Sifu Sabrina. I’ve no money to pay you. As a token of appreciation, please accept this bar of chocolate.”

Sifu Sabrina unwraps the chocolate and takes a bite. “This chocolate’s as sweet as you. Good luck in your accountancy studies.”
